James Walker Brown
May 29, 1916 - March 27, 2005
James Walker Brown, Sr., 88, of West Chester, passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2005 at the Pocopson Home. He was the husband of Margaret G. Bond Brown. He was born on May 29, 1916 in Hamorton, PA to the late Stephen and Ida Webster Brown.
He attended and graduated from the Kennett Square High School in 1934, were he was a track star, competing in the Triple jump formerly the hop, skip and jump. He later briefly played on the Kennett Square Gray Socks.
During the war years, he served as a supervisor of the Elkton powder plant in Elkton, MD, and after the war he went to work for JB Swayne Mushroom Cannery as a supervisor of cannery for over 40 years. He later went to work at Grocery Store Products in West Chester, which was bought out by Clorox, and he retired in the 1980s.
James was a former member of Bethel AME Church of Kennett Square for many years, and since 1981 he had been a member of Mount Tabor AME Zion Church of Avondale. He was active in the church, holding many offices including Trustee, at one point.
He was a member of the West Goshen Lions, where he was Man of the Year twice. His activities also included participation in the Actionaires Club of Kennett Square, active in community and then appointed to the Borough Council of Kennett Square, member of the Thursday Afternoon Retired Men's Club, volunteered almost 10, 000 hours at the Chester County Hospital, board member and volunteer at the West Chester Community Center. He founded Troop #60 of Kennett Square in 1953, where he was Scout Master and active in the scouts for over 20 years, and was the recipient of the Eagle pin. He was also the recipient of the Chapel of Four Chaplains Award in 1986, Southern Chester County Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award in 1973.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, J. Walker Brown, Jr. of Kennett Square; daughter, Ida E. Williams of Elkridge, Maryland; five devoted stepchildren; two sisters, Elizabeth 'Betty' Brown and Ruth Brown both of Kennett Square and six grandchildren.
